The Modern Day Beer Festival And Its Origins

By Neil Lcb Feather

Beer has been around since 9500BC when cereal was first farmed in Neolithic times. In fact, ancient Egypt and Mesopotamians enjoyed this brewed beverage long long ago. Modern day beer festival celebrations can be traced back to this time too. Today, you can attend festivals in just about any part of the world. If you can find a way to attend one of these celebrations, you will remember it forever.

Oktoberfest is one of the most popular and well-known events. Every year, it occurs in Munich during the latter part of September and stretching into the month of October. This event is the modern incarnation of the beer festival now seen all parts of the world.

Early October of 1810 is when the first Oktoberfest is known to have taken place, in Munich. This celebration was given for the royal wedding for Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Theresa. All the people of Munich were asked to attend. One of the most memorable parts of this celebration was the horse races that the Royal Family enjoyed. The races were the main reason that the tradition was carried on and Oktoberfest has been held annually except for times of epidemics or war.

If you live in Britain you may wish to attend the Great British Beer Festival (GBBF) during the month of August. The event has the reputation of being the biggest pub in the world as you encounter hundreds of different kinds of real ale and great beer offerings from around the world. More than 1000 people volunteer their time to staff and work this celebration.

The GBBF is hosted by CAMRA the Campaign for Real Ale an organisation that promotes real ale, local community pubs and consumer rights. At the first beer festival in 1975 more than 40,000 people attended and consumed over 150,000 pints of real ale. The Beer Festival is held annually usually in London except in 1984 when it was cancelled. The GBBF is the largest beer festival in UK, but is only one of many thousands of beer festivals that are held each year around the country.

If you search the internet you can find an event for just about every week in the year. Finding a local beer festival is not difficult you will probably find one close to where you live.
